Science Summer Camp 2026 for Kids Ages 6-12
Chemistry & Reactions Camp
Step into the exciting world of chemistry through hands-on experiments, colorful reactions, and creative science projects. In this camp, students explore acids and bases, pH, mixtures, solutions, polymers, density, and chemical reactions through engaging activities designed to make science fun and memorable. Each day combines experiments, engineering challenges, journaling, and science games to help children think like young scientists while building curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Day 1 – pH & Acids/Bases
Students begin the week by learning about acids, bases, and the pH scale. They test common liquids such as lemon juice, vinegar, soap, and baking soda solution, observing color changes and identifying whether substances are acidic or basic. They also arrange liquids on a pH scale chart and create a creative pH poster using craft materials and recycled paper. The day includes science journaling and an interactive acid-base bingo game to reinforce new vocabulary and concepts.
Day 2 – Elephant Toothpaste
Campers explore chemical reactions by investigating how hydrogen peroxide reacts with yeast or other catalysts to create a rapid foaming reaction. Students mix ingredients, observe the foam formation, and measure foam height and reaction time to compare different mixtures. For the engineering project, they create foam art and safe “foam towers” using recycled containers. Journaling and a reaction race game help students reflect on what they observed and strengthen safe lab habits.
Day 3 – Slime & Polymers
Students learn about polymers and discover how slime demonstrates this scientific concept in a fun, hands-on way. They make their own slime using glue, baking soda, and contact solution, and also experiment with Oobleck, a non-Newtonian fluid that behaves like both a solid and a liquid. For the engineering challenge, students create slime sculptures or small models using slime and recycled containers. The day also includes science journaling and a slime relay game for extra fun and teamwork.
Day 4 – Crystal Growing & Density Towers
This day focuses on crystallization, density, and mixtures. Students grow crystals using salt or sugar solutions and observe how crystals form over time. They also build density towers by layering liquids such as honey, oil, and water, then test how different objects float or sink in each layer. For the creative engineering activity, students make density art by designing layered jars and floating objects using recycled containers. Science journaling and a mixture-and-solution matching game help reinforce the day’s learning.
Day 5 – Chemistry Engineering Challenge
On the final day, students review the week’s chemistry concepts, including pH, reactions, polymers, and density, and apply their knowledge in a series of fun challenge activities. They revisit favorite reactions, test different ingredient combinations, and observe how proportions affect outcomes. They also experiment with floating objects and layered liquids in a density challenge. For the final project, students create a chemistry showcase, combining what they learned into a fun demonstration such as layered density jars, slime with color-change effects, or safe foam towers. The week ends with journaling and a lively chemistry trivia challenge.
What students will gain:
Children develop observation skills, scientific thinking, creativity, and confidence while exploring chemistry through active, hands-on learning. This camp encourages students to ask questions, test ideas, and discover how science works in the world around them.
